more pics later
Airsoft Gun Specs....
Length: 739mm with the stock extended/ 499mm with the stock folded
Inner Barrel Length: 260mm
Weight: 2630g without battery (real steel is 2710 with an empty magazine)
Rate Of Fire: 850 rounds per minute w/ 8.4v 600mah battery
Just got around to chronoing the gun. With the adjustable hop set for Toytec .25g BBs, the Marui AKS74U clocked at 264-272 FPS. With the same hop setting, I chronoed the gun again. This time, Toytec .20g BBs, and Marui .20g BBs were used. The gun shot around 297-304 FPS and 300-302 FPS respectively.
Considering that the barrel length is approximately 13mm ( two BBs length) longer than a P90/G36C/AK Beita, the 74U shot on the high side with a 260mm inner barrel.
Range is as expected for a TM AEG. It has a straight kill range upwards 170 feet on semi auto and no wind.
---------------------
Skirmishing
The TM AKS74U was fielded a couple of days ago. As far as range goes, compared to the TM AK74MN (which was upgraded to shoot to 325 FPS with .20g BBs), the 74U loses out by about 10 feet. The velocity by which the BB travels is not at all that noticeable. As expected, the gun has a straight shot kill range of about 160 feet. Lobbing shots would get kills as far as 200 feet out.
Lobbing shots? Sure. Why not? Its airsoft.
The battery that was used was an 8.4v 1200mah NIMH mini battery. I have used these batteries in my old TM AK74MN with an SP90 spring. The battery lasts at least 2500rounds before it dies completely.
Update: 8/26/08
I have noticed that the hop dial backs out little by little after a good amount of full auto shooting. There's no real way of getting around it as the gun vibrates every time you shoot it (more so with a heavier spring installed in the gun). What I ended up doing was "fixing" the hop with the use of rubber cement. Rubber cement sticks well, is removable, and does not leave a residue. The downside to this fix is that you will be limited to the brand of ammo that you could use (unless you remove the adhesive holding the hop dial in place). Not an issue if you're using one brand of bb's exclusively.
Upgrades:
I just got around to upgrading the 74U. With a Guarder SP100 spring and the hop set for Toytec .25g BBs, the AK was clocked in at 372-377 FPS with TM .20g BBs. With the Toytec .25g BBs, the gun chronoes at 334-339 FPS.
----------------------
---------------------
The nit-picky things...
The foregrips do not have the gap in between the top and the bottom half. Why? Cause they cover up the battery. Either the battery is covered with them, or part of the battery is exposed without them...
What I do like about the handguards however is that there is room in it for a custom 9.6v 1600mah (or even 10.8v 1600mah) NIMH mini type battery. No real modifications need to be done. All you really have to do is to take the battery/fuse tray out. No cutting involved.
Another thing about the gun is that the rear sights aren't painted over. The notches are small small so quick target acquisition could get some time to get used to. On a bright side, the gun shoots so straight that once the front sight has been adjusted, the gun is dead on with no wind.
No side mount for a scope mount. Unlike the TM AK47MN, the 74U does not come with the side mount. Not really a big deal. After all, the gun is $20 cheaper than its big brother- the 74MN.

too much... 470.06 after shipping...no battery...
the black mag that I have is the one I had originally bought and used on my old TM AK74MN which I recently just sold...
There are little things about the 74U that I'm not particularly fond of. But, I can get over those things. Much like the AK74MN, this little puppy is fun to shoot. |

BUY BUY BUY!
I hope MAG comes out with mags for them soon. Odds are, they won't. At least not up until the end of the year. |

"There are little things about the 74U that I'm not particularly fond of."

Improving design sometimes means sacrificing backward compatibility.
Shooting my MN is well worth the investment in proprietary mags. _________________ "The faster you finish the fight, the less kil't you'll get." |

The new mags look very nice and I like how they incorporate the upper lip of the real mags. The fact that all the bb's are fed is a huge plus. When I mean all I mean once all the bb's are fed and you pull out the mag. You don't get the customary few bb's fall out. _________________ Pygmy Militia Group

They have if you want to get the Type 89. Which I believe is based of the original AR10. _________________ Pygmy Militia Group
